July 24
Well, today was the last day of my weekends in Ireland. This morning, I went with Dr. Tietjen, Howard, Amanda B, and Hilary M to church downtown. It was so great being able to go to church. The service was done much like it would be done at a Methodist Church. There was a baby being baptised. It was so awesome! Afterwards, I went over to The Park Inn and watched the hurling game with some friends. Waterford beat Galway in the Quarterfinals! Up the Deise! That was pretty much all I did today. This will probably be the last week I write posts. I'll write posts until Thursday and then start back up later in the Fall. Bye.

A day out in Dublin
July 23
Since our plans got changed, we decided to make the best of it and spend the day in Dublin. When we checked out of our hostel, we walked around town. We went to the National Gallery of Ireland. The artwork there was beautiful! Afterwards, we stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch. That was pretty awesome! After lunch, we walked over to the National Museum of Archaeology. It was pretty cool to see how different artifacts progressed through time. Once we left, we took a taxi back to the bus station and took a bus back to our home in Waterford. It has been a long weekend. I'm gonna go to bed. I'll be waking up in the morning to go to a church service at a Cathedral downtown. Bye.

Lost in Translation
July 22
Well, this weekend has been quite an adventure. Things did not go as we had planned. We had originally planned on going to see the highest cliffs in Europe in Donegal. We had it all set up. On Friday morning we woke up at 5am and left our apartment at 6am, so that we could catch the 6:50am bus to Dublin. It took about two and a half hours to get to Dublin. Once we were in Dublin, we took another bus to Sligo. That took another three hours. We had to get off in Boyle because that was where we were going to stay for the night. When we got off the bus, there was someone already there to pick us up. He was one of the people that ran the hostel that we were going to stay at for the night. He drove us there, but come to find out, it was in the middle of nowhere. There was a lake, a field, and that was it. It was nowhere near town. There was no way we could get to town, unless we got a taxi. We were trying to find a way to go to the cliffs, but there was no use. It would have cost us more to get back to our hostel from the cliffs. With no chance of going to the cliffs, we decided at 4pm to just take a bus back to Dublin. So we got a taxi and it picked us up from our hostel and took us to the bus stop in town. It was another three hours back to Dublin. Once we got to our hostel in Dublin it was already around midnight. We had been on a bus for eleven hours total that day! So that's what happened. So what if our plans got changed. Some of the best moments in life are those that go unplanned.

What an Adventure!
July 21
Well, today was quite an adventure. It was our last field trip. Most of us went to Dublin. In Dublin, we went to Kilmainham Gaol. It was a jail that is now an historic site. It was pretty interesting. I had never been to jail before. It was quite an experience. Afterwards, most of the group split off. There were three groups of us. Two groups left and our teacher wasn't with us. So our group was pretty much left stranded. We had to find the bus to get our stuff, but that would mean we would have to go to the other side of town. So we had to find a way to get there. Luckily, we were able to take a bus to the center of town and we walked from there. But once we got there, the bus wasn't there, so someone had to call one of the teachers and ask him for the bus driver's phone number. Soon enough, we were able to get in contact with our bus driver and he came eventually. Once we got our stuff off of the bus, we walked to a hostel that some of the girls were going to stay at. They checked in and we were off once again. We had to walk to the Gate Theatre, which was where we saw the play tonight. We got a tour of the Gate Theatre. It is a nice building. The ceiling was gorgeous and I loved the chandeliers. It was small, but it could seat up to 371 people. The building was once a hospital. The play we saw was Molly Sweeney. It was very good. It was simple, yet very moving. Afterwards, we all walked over to the bus station, so I could get back home to Waterford. Now, I'm back at 1am. I'm very tired. Gonna go to bed. I'll check in next week. Bye.

Soccer Game
July 20
Classes went well today. We had a guest speaker at our culture class. His grandfather was the President of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Dinner was pretty good. I had pasta and an awesome raspberry dessert. After dinner, my teacher and a few of my friends went to a soccer game. It was a lot of fun! Waterford won! Woohoo! Overall, today was a great day. Gonna go on my last field trip tomorrow. I'll check back in later. Bye.

Last Tuesday Field Trip
July 19
Well, today was the next to last field trip. We went to Kilkenny. It's a neat town. We got to go inside Kilkenny Castle. That was pretty interesting. Later, we went to an Abbey. That was pretty cool. Overall, today was a pretty good day. Not too much going on tomorrow. I'll check back in later this week. Bye.

Another School Day
July 18
Well, my classes were pretty interesting today. International Relations is just blowing my mind! What I learned from Philosophy is contradictory to what I am learning in my Global Issues class. Not the first thing you want to hear on a Monday morning. In my Irish Drama in Performance class, we started rehearsing for our 2 minute scene that we have to act out as a class in front of the professor. It was a lot of fun! In my Irish culture class, we learned basic Gaelic. It is so interesting yet so confusing at the same time. I still had a lot of fun though. The meals were great today. I had two hot dogs for dinner! Yum! That's all for today. Gonna go on my last field trip with my morning class tomorrow. Check back in tomorrow. Bye.

Trip through the county of Wexford
July 16
Today, we went to a few places on our trip. First, we went to the Woodstock Estate. It had a wonderful garden. Afterwards, we went to the Tintern Abbey. It was beautiful. Later, we went to the Hook Lighthouse. It is the oldest lighthouse in Northwestern Europe. One of my friends and I rock climbed down to the sea. It was awesome! I love rock climbing! A day in town
July 15
Today, I did not travel outside of town. Some of my friends and I went downtown for a while. I went with a couple of my guy friends to a great French restaurant called L'Atmosphere. It was amazing! The food was great and affordable! We had a full three course meal for a great price! Afterwards, we went back to the apartments. Overall, today was a good day. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go on a field trip to Woodstock, and some other places. More photos coming soon. Bye.

Field Trip in Dublin
July 14
I went with my Theatre class to see a play at the Abbey Theatre called Translations by Brian Friel. While we were in Dublin, we went through part of Phoenix Park, which is the largest enclosed urban park in Europe. We went by the President's residence, the Dublin Zoo, which is one of the oldest zoos in the world, and the U.S. Ambassador's residence. Afterwards, we went to the Dublin Writer's Museum. It was an interesting. We each had a phone that acted as an audio guide throughout the museum. Unfortunately my phone died on me when I was halfway through the museum. Later, we walked over to the Garden of Remembrance. It was created in memory of those who lost their lives during the Easter Rising of 1916. After we left the garden, we walked over the theatre to get our tickets. Guess who was right outside?! Brian Friel! The playwright who wrote Translations! It was surreal! I couldn't believe we were going to see a play written by Brian Friel and actually see him in person! He sat only a few rows in front of me. The play was great. It's not everyday you get to see the person who wrote the play. Got back to my apartment at 1am. Very tired, but overall, a great day. Check back in later. Bye.

Classes
July 13
Well, classes went well today. I'm so glad I don't have any extra tests. We played a trivia game in our culture class. We were all on teams. The prize was an engraved bowl made of Waterford Crystals for each person. I knew some answers. We did not win, but I had fun. Tomorrow, I'm going with my Theater class to see a play called Translations. I'll check back in tomorrow. Bye.

Field Trip
July 12
Today, we all went to Ardmore. Once we got there, we stopped at a school where they teach Gaelic. We met the person in charge of the school. He was our tour guide for the day. We drove down to the beach in downtown Ardmore. When we got there, we looked at Declan's stone. It is said that if you can crawl through the stone, then you will not have back problems. Later, we walked up to where Declan spent his time alone. It was so peaceful. Afterwards, we went to Declan's monastery. It was so amazing to see carved pictures in stone that depicted the life of Jesus. Once we left, I walked down to the beach. I love the beach! Overall, today was great. I'll check back in tomorrow. We're gonna go on a field trip tomorrow to Ardmore. We'll get to go to a Gaelic speaking school. I can't wait to learn more Gaelic! I'll check back in tomorrow. Bye.

Hurling Game
July 10
Today some of us got the chance to go to a hurling game! It was Waterford against Tipperary. Waterford had made it to the finals! It was such a great experience! There were two matches. The first match was the junior match. We were off to a rough start in the first half, but we managed to gain some more points after halftime. During halftime, there was a marching band! I got so excited! It took me back to when I was in marching band. I noticed so many problems though. They were not all in step and the angles of the flutes were terrible. Unfortunately, we lost 22-17. The second match was the senior match. They were also off to a rough start in the first half, but failed to gain a whole lot of points on the board throughout the rest of the game. We had left before the game was over. Tipperary had won with about 30 points. The most exciting part of the game was halftime. During halftime, there were two matches going on between Waterford and Tipperary. This was the younger age division. The kids were playing better than the adults. Although we lost, we still cheer for Waterford. Up the Deise!

Horseback Riding
July 9
A group of us went to go horseback riding at Lake Tour Stables in Tramore. It was so awesome! I haven't been on a horse in over 5 years. This was the first time I would actually get to ride a horse without someone leading it. We went on a trail. The landscape was so beautiful. We went around the lake. My horse's name was Copper. It was mainly walking and trotting. At one point, I got to gallop on it. It was totally awesome! I am so sore right now, but it was so worth it. Well, that's it for today. I'll check back in tomorrow. Bye.

Rainy Day
July 8
Well, today a group of us went over to the beach in Tramore. It was great! I love the beach! Some of my friends took surfing lessons. There was a lot of rain today. It was on and off. There had been sprinkles and then there were downpours. When we left, it started to downpour. We were soaking wet by the time we got to the bus stop. Luckily, the bus just got there. Well, everyone is pretty tired. Lots more to do tomorrow. Hopefully, the weather isn't bad. Bye.

Theatre Field Trip
July 7
I went with my theatre class to Kilkenny. Before we went to the theatre, we went to Jerpoint Abbey. It was an interesting place. There was no roof, but you can see where all the rooms were. It also had stone carvings of various apostles from the Bible. Afterwards, we went to the Watergate Theatre. We got to have a tour of the theatre. During the tour, we were able to meet and talk to the director of the play that we were going to see that night. The director gave us a personal tour backstage. We got to see all the dressing rooms. After the tour, we all split up and just walked around town. I went with a couple of classmates. I had found a place called Choc-O-Latte. It was awesome! There was chocolate everywhere! I got some ice cream. It was the best ice cream I ever had! The ice cream was made from a farm right outside Kilkenny. Later on, we all met back up for dinner at the Moon City Restaurant. It was a nice place. I had seafood chowder. It was very good. After dinner, we went back to the theatre and watched a play called Lovers. It was sad, but also quite funny. Again, I would not recommend it to anyone under 18. After the play, we got to talk to the director and one of the main actors! It was a great night. Well, I'll check back in later this week. Bye.

Trip to Dublin
July 5
Today we took a field trip to Dublin. We all went with our classes. My class went to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College and Dublin Castle. The Book of Kells was so amazing! It is an illuminated manuscript that contains the four Gospels of the New Testament and other texts. Later, we went over to Dublin Castle. At Dublin Castle, we went to the Revenue Museum. It was interesting. There was a game inside. What you had to do was try to find all the contraband. I failed miserably, but others found it just fine. We also went to the Chester Beatty Library. We looked through two galleries in the library. One of the galleries was called Arts of the Book. Inside the gallery, there was books from ancient times and manuscripts that were beautifully decorated and written. It is so astonishing how the writers of the books could write so small and precise. It takes a lot of time and practice to do calligraphy. The other gallery we looked at was called The Sacred Traditions. It showcased the great religions of the world. It had everything from Christianity to Daoism. In the Christianity section, it had the ancient texts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Paul. Actually seeing Paul's letter to Philippi was simply amazing. After we left the library, we went to the Central Bank of Ireland. Then, we went to the park and left from there. Overall, today was a great day.

Fourth of July
I hope everyone had a great fourth of July. It felt so weird having class today. Classes went well. After class, we all went outside to learn the game of hurling. It was so awesome! Even the teachers were giving it a try. I was watching everyone. Knowing me, I would probably be the one who would get hit by the ball. Dinner was pretty amazing. Guess what we had for dinner?! Hot dogs and hamburgers! Since we could not be at home for the fourth of July, the people who made dinner made us feel more at home. It was a surprise to all of us. That was so nice of them to do that for us. At one point during dinner, we all sang the national anthem together. After dinner, some of us went outside to play hurling. I was recording it. Overall, it was a pretty good day.

Nothing but schoolwork
July 3
Well, today I am staying inside. I have been working on schoolwork. It is nice having a large window to look out of, so I can see the bright sunshine. Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. This is the first time I am not going to be able to celebrate it. I will always remember the men and women who are serving our country and who have died for our country. Hope you all have a Happy Fourth of July :)

Tall Ships Festival Weekend: Last Day
July 2
Some of my friends and I went downtown to hang out. We ate lunch at a Cafe. The food was great! Although, I would have liked to have a taller glass for my coke. They didn't do free refills. After lunch, we walked to the river to see all the ships that were there. I got a crepe at one of the tents that were there. It was so good! My crepe had apple sauce and cinnamon sugar in it(yum!) After we all took some pictures of the ships, we went back to campus. Once we got back to our apartment, we watched Secondhand Lions and a little TV afterwards. Well, that's it for today. Nothing much is gonna happen tomorrow. I'm staying in so I can work on some schoolwork. Check back in later this week. Bye.

Tall Ships Festival Weekend
July 1
Today some of my friends and I went downtown to check out all the ships. We saw a parade that had all the sailors representing their country's ship. Most of the day we just walked around town. Once we got back to our apartment there was a huge party going on at the field right by our apartment. There is hot air balloons, Irish dancing, and Sailors in uniform. We were given free food(it was yummy!) Well, that's it for today. I'll check back in later this week.
First day of Field Trips
June 30
We all went downtown and got a guided tour of the area by a very knowledgeable historian(he was very funny). After the tour, my Irish Drama class got a tour of the Garter Lane Theatre. Once the tour was over, we ate dinner together and then we all split up and I just went with some classmates and looked around town until we all met up for the play that night. The play we saw was called The Blonde, Brunette, and The Vengeful Redhead. It was a one-woman show. She did a great job. It was funny, but I would not recommend it to anyone under 18. After the play, some of my classmates and I walked to the river and watched the fireworks. It was awesome! I'm so glad I got to see fireworks. More photos and pictures to come soon.
